Why I don't have a vanity tag on my BMW

My first thought: that license plate is kinda funny. Second thought: that tag on a 335i, with tinted windows and Pittsburgh Steelers tag frame (but local Wisconsin plates)...is this guy a douche?

I know people think I'm a douche in my 135is so I feel like I shouldn't draw more attention with a custom tag. Amirite?

If you drive a 135is you get a pass on the douche stereotypes because it's awesome.

It's almost like picturing a stereotypical Lamborghini driver, until you find out he drives an Espada.

Well mostly it's hanging out in the garage for Wisconsin winter. 97% of my driving right now is my Grand Cherokee.

Mine are M DRIVR 3. Ya I know they're tacky, but it's a weekend car so I really don't care. I have HOON on order in black and white. ;)

Smart thing to do if you want to keep the 135is for the years to come, and I'm sure you do.

You have an 135is.. As long as you make your plate a little funny you'll get praise from fellow enthusiasts haha. Nice ride!

My guess is some kid just graduated UW-Madison, landed a decent paying job and he went out to buy a 335 and thinks that he "pwned" the world by being a young success story. Sorry buddy, there are millions just like you but who choose not to flaunt their money.

I'm 25, make enough to be phased out from student loan interest deductions, and I drive a 13 year old POS Subaru that is rusting below the gas door

We shall see. It's a lease, and since I have the Jeep I kinda want to get a convertible as my next car. If I keep it $25k or less that's a good chunk below the buyout price on the lease. So, convertible, save money.

That's cool, I have a '99 V8 Laredo. How does yours handle the snow? Mine doesn't get much off-road action living in Atlanta.

We'll see how long you can hold out.

I was you 5 years ago (that interest thing is a bitch, isn't it? Shows you where the federal government's priorities are - I guess the struggling population of students with crushing debt hasn't been aggressive enough about hiring lobbyists to change federal tax policy. You can deduct all the interest on a healthy amount of home equity indebtedness no matter what you make...I don't really see why, from a federal tax standpoint, THAT particular "investment" should be favored over investment in one's education......but I digress), only I had a 7 year old Grand Prix that was in pretty decent shape. Of course, dreaming about cars is basically the only thing that got me through all that school. I only made it to 26 before I decided that I deserved (and the situation warranted) something better. I had my 335 from then until a month before my 30th birthday, when I bought myself my E90 M3.

Lest you think I neglected my other responsibilities, my loans are under a third of what they were when I graduated 5 years ago (and they were 911 turbo money). I am a huge fan of prioritizing financial responsibilities, but I let myself have my car hobby. It's my only passion - I don't want wait until I'm 65 to be able to enjoy it.

(As an aside, the kid with the limo tint and vanity plate above is almost certainly a douche, and almost certainly had his parents pay for 100% of his college. You don't get a "pwwnd" license plate if you're not entitled, and you don't buy a 335 if you actually have enough money to get a "pwwnd" license place. All signs point to douche.)

I like automotive enthusiasts that want to experience as much different kinds of cars as possible, it seems like the best thing to do throughout one's lifetime.

Oh I completely agree. Sounds like you and I have a similar story. I never thought I was going to get through my junior year of engineering school, so I bought 5 matchbox cars and taped them to the top of my computer monitor so that anytime I got distracted or downtrodden I would have to keep reminding myself that if I made it through, someday I could reap the benefits

Kinja'd!!!

My private school loan debt was more like 911 Carrera money, but still more than any kid would like to be in the hole before he even has a career. Right now I'm keen on paying off student loans and shoveling as much money as possible into my 401k/IRA. As Einstein once said, "the power of compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe". My wife and I are buying a house this summer and then we'll buy me a new car once my Subaru hits 200k... or at least that's the plan.

Yes, that all sounds quite promising!

I think our major divergence is that I bought the car before a house ... and I don't have a wife (although if we don't get engaged relatively soon I won't have a girlfriend, either lol).

Here in Wisconsin, vanity tags are really cheap: only $15/year on top of your regular registration fee. You also don't have to be a UW alumni to get a Bucky Badger license plate, you just have to pay an extra $20 which goes to UW.

I don't really take mine off road either, it's just for getting around town in foul weather. It handles snow like this:

Same with ours in PA, except that it's a one-time fee for the plate. After that, registration is the usual $36. Interestingly, I applied for a "DARE" plate, which was cool because it was black, in 2002. The numbers are randomly assigned. I got one ending in "M3" and proudly put it on my Pontiac that I owned at the time. Fast forward 12 years and it's now on my M3! That has worked out =)

This is actually the first time I've leased a car. In the past I've kept them at least 4-5 years and modify them at least a little bit.

This time it just happened that I was able to work out a really solid lease deal on the 135is, and a good trade on my old '06 Mazdaspeed 6 that was developing rust problems and I wanted to get out from under it before the rust took over. The trade value took care of the MS6 loan payoff, plus the down payment, tax, tags etc for the 135is with no money out of pocket.

Sounds like a pretty nice deal. It's good that there's always the option to buy the car at the end of the lease anyway, this way you'll know if you want to keep it any longer and/or modify it.
